On Monday 30 March 2026, The Edinburgh Centre for Financial Innovations hosted an expert-led Impact Workshop on Financial Vulnerability and Economic Hardship as part of Gbenga Ibikunle’s Smart Data Research UK Fellowship, funded by UK Research and Innovation/Economic and Social Research Council/Smart Data Research UK.

With almost half of UK adults having experienced financial vulnerability over the past few years, the event is timely.

The workshop designed as a series of roundtables with participation, with experts from the charities sector, financial services companies, financial services regulators and research academics, helped refine the research agenda for the Smart Data Research UK Fellowship, which is expected to conclude in 2027. The project will use proprietary financial transactions data, provided by the Smart Data Research UK’s Financial Data Service and managed by the Smart Data Foundry at the University of Edinburgh, to characterise the evolution of financial vulnerability at the household level in the UK.
